Blizzard of '06

Baker's Dozen doesn't seem to be up anymore, but I still wanted to a "Baker's Dozen" entry of my weekend as a way to sum it up. The east coast had its first snow storm of 2006, and wind gusts were high enough to designate the storm as a blizzard. My town didn't get hit as bad as others. School was canceled today for all the surrounding towns, but my town stayed open. The sidewalks were slippery and snow-filled, but the streets weren't too bad this morning. I had to do a good deal of shoveling when I got to work though. C'est la vie.

The wee one gathers eggs filled with jelly beans before she takes up her markers and plays the role of artiste. Earlier in the day she busied herself with her new bubbles. It's amazing how much babies grow in just a few months. I have more photos that I'll be adding later. I just can't resist. =)

My little neice is busy at work creating her masterpiece, coloring on the walls with washable markers. The partial arm in the photo belongs to my sis who's busy doodling on the paper as well. Earlier that morning she had a great time playing with her new bubble maker.

Earlier in the day I took a photo much like the above, on my front porch. It was still snowing at the time. So, I decided to take another one, late this afternoon, once the initial round of shoveling had been finished. The above is the result, taken with the flash on my digital camera. Notice that there is now a mound of snow where before ... there wasn't. We have more shoveling to do as well, but I think it can wait until the morning. Problem is, I don't know where we'll put it all. ;-)

Well, it's our first real snowstorm of the year, a blizzard actually, complete with hurricane force winds. The snow started yesterday afternoon and will probably continue until this evening, though not with such speed or force as the snowfalls of last night and this morning. I'm hoping work is canceled tomorrow. :)

I posted more pictures I had taken this morning, before I bundled up for some shoveling, over on my live journal, if you're interested.

Above are a few photos from our excursions to Plymouth over the summer that I haven't yet posted. It was a chilly autumn day today - beautiful but chilly. Looking over some of the photos I'd taken (mostly with my digital) over the summer, it made me nostalgic for tees and warm sunshine. It's funny in a way; Fall (not Summer) is actually my favorite season.

For PhotoTime Tuesday's theme "Soft", it's our soft, furry cat Tiggy aka Tig-Tig, Jujubee, psycho kitty, and a host of other nicknames. Most recently, we've been calling him Puss in Boots (from "Shrek 2") Puss is our cat .. only animated. Our previous cat Baby was nothing like Puss, but Tiggy? .. Oh yeah! lol

Lady in Green, Worldcon 2004 aka Noreascon 4, Boston, 6 September 2004

This was one of the many beautiful costumes from past Worldcon Masquerades that were on display in the Hynes Convention Center over Labor Day weekend. I'll be posting more photos from that weekend over the next few days (to hopefully capture your imagination), and once my convention report is finished, I'll post links to that as well if anyone is interested. I uploaded a photo to my fotolog yesterday, but it has yet to show up. I attempted to upload another just a few minutes ago, but the site is telling me that I've met my daily upload limit. *takes deep breath*

If you're wondering (like I was before I attended), just What is a Worldcon?, then you should visit the site of the World Science Fiction Society and follow the links. It was an event-filled weekend full of films, costumes (though not as many as I'd thought there'd be), writers, publishers, editors, the Hugo Awards, panels and workshops, scientists (like the good people from NASA!), and other fans from all over the world. I especially enjoyed talking with the wonderful people from The Heinlein Society, who were our neighbors for the weekend.

Adventures in Scaping

My Baker's Dozen for the weekend:

1. Meeting Canadian, South African, UK and Israeli Scapers
2. Lugging heavy boxes to and from the hotel room
3. Chatting it up with the Heinlein Society folk
4. Attending the Hugo Awards at Worldcon Boston!
5. Getting an autograph from Neil Gaiman
6. Watching in amazement and awe at the beautiful costumes in the Masquerade
7. Going to my first con suite party every .. hosted by the Boston Star Trek Association
8. Driving in a circle after we miss the exit for the VFW Parkway and then deciding to do the highway instead
9. Connecting to the net in my hotel room & being overjoyed that it really *was* high speed internet access as promised
10. Rewarding myself with a multitude of strawberries (among other things) at the hotel's buffet breakfast
11. Laughing hysterically at the One Man Star Wars show performance
12. Talking Farscape with people all weekend .. including the gentleman who stopped by our table to pick up a few Farscape alien swears for his panel on Monday

The ocean and the idea of sailing call to me on warm, sunny days. Sitting by the water, looking out at the waves and the sky, always leaves me feeling relaxed and at peace. So does being surrounded by flowers and trees (as long as I've taken some allergy medicine first).

Why Does That Rock Say 1620?

On Sunday, August 8, we took another day trip to Plymouth, and while we looked again at the Rock, I overheard a young boy ask his parents, "Why does that rock say 1620?" His parents had no response to that, except to admit they didn't know and then wondered aloud if they should throw pennies at the rock for good luck. (I suppose if you kiss the Blarney Stone in Ireland, it makes perfect sense to throw your change at Plymouth Rock.) I was tempted to speak up and give a little history lesson as to why "that rock," in historic Plymouth, would have the year 1620 carved in it but thought better of it. What I would consider being helpful might be taken as offensive by someone else, and I didn't wish to offend. It was an honest question by the boy, and I was surprised that his parents could not think of an answer.

In any case, I've just gotten the chance to resize some of the photos I'd taken and will hopefully (barring unforseen obstacles to my internet access) be uploading them over the next few days.

Housing for the rock in question reminds me of an ancient temple, and for some reason it fascinates me.

I have yet to board the Mayflower, but there are so many other sights to see when we visit, that there's never enough time. Next trip to Plymouth will have to include some sort of harbor tour or a whale watch or something else that'll take me out onto the water. =)

Blueberry picking was a bust over the weekend, but I got to spend some play time with my little niece on Saturday instead. =) Sunday we headed up to New Hampshire for a cousin's graduation party, and I'm glad we went. I had a good time, and I'm sure she and her family appreciated us being there. It was nice. =)

Anyway, my Baker's Dozen for the weekend:

- I reached level 30 in Shape Shifter.
- Played phone tag with Katya as we tried to arrange plans for blueberry picking.
- Played with and cuddled with my little niece. It's a wonderful feeling when a child looks up at you and smiles and smiles ..
- Text messaged a friend. She knew my cell phone was lonely.
- Desperately missed our little bird Angel but was pleased, at the same time, that he wasn't up for sale in the pet store.
- I was invited to go hiking and actually might be able to go for a change. The invitation was nice and was appreciated.
- My fear of driving on the highway was not lessened by the driver who swerved into the fast lane without looking and then swerved back into his lane after my uncle honked, applied the brakes, and swerved to miss him.
- Cheeseburgers, potato salad, chips, dip, cheese cake, cookies, and much more at the smorgasborg my aunt had prepared for my cousin's graduation party!
- Exploring the fish pond, gazebo, and other assorted landscaping that exists in my photographer aunt & uncle's backyard
- Finding several teensy frogs, a giant orange (camera shy) Carp, butterlies, some small fish, and a big plump froggy in the assorted little ponds in their backyard
- Received an email from J. requesting a scan of an old crush. *g* Yeah, I had a crush on him, too. *vbg*
- D(after spotting the "Free Bunnies" sign): Oh, let's get Ella a bunny!
me: Not until she's older.
M: Yesterday T. mentioned that she wants Ella to have a bunny. A small pet that she can hold and that'll grow up with her .. because Francis was such a great experience ..
me: Yes, but not until she's older.
D: Aw, come on, they're giving away Free Bunnies now!
M: No, you're right. T. will kill us. She'll want to keep it, too.
D: They'll be like Timmy and Lassie ..
M (unconvinced): Timmy and Lassie?
D: Yeah, she can name the bunny Belle. Elle and Belle ..
M: That's great .. Elle and Belle ..
meanwhile, I'm chuckling softly to myself in the backseat .. *vbg*

My digital tends to take wider shots than what I see before me. It was a good weekend although events did not unfold the way I'd originally envisioned. Luckily, Plan B was just as good.
My Baker's Dozen ...

* "You're still going to pick blueberries ..?"
* Last minute shopping trip resulting in pants that fit
* Viewing Party Saturday night with most of the usual crew, treats a plenty, in the sauna that is Digger's condo
* Watching the Farscape wrap (2002) on DVD and sharing in the shock and sadness with the cast & crew all over again then smiling to myself during the Save Farscape ads and cast interviews
* Making popcorn
* Hearing Rubyhorse for the first time
* Watching dance troupe Collage and the spontaneous, costumed dancers in the street
* Soft-serve ice cream and caramelly drinks
* The bubble gun lady in the funny, pink hat, blowing/shooting her bubbles from the stage into the audience
* Walking up and down Mass. Ave. for a good two hours
* Having to decide between making the last train home or seeing my friend play in his band
* Realizing that I didn't have enough for a cab ride home and so I would miss The Slackers show once again

An impromtu day trip to Plymouth leads to a wealth of photographs over the weekend. lol

Welcome to my photo blog, and a Happy Fourth of July to the 'Mericans. :)

I've been inspired by the photo journals out on the web and, after answering my first Photo Friday challenge (Father), decided to start my own web log of photographs.

My intent is to make myself use my cameras more (whether it's the 35mm, the digital, or the DV) and to share, each day, some of the results. I've extended an invitation to my sisters to join me here, sharing their photos as well. Perhaps once in awhile, I'll scan one of my Dad's old pictures and share that as well (if he gives his permission).
